on cdc numbers. >> so, you know, i always watch with interest michelle obama as she gardens in the back and she gets her message out about exercising and eating right, but that's michelle obama. what about the candidates themselves? are they looking at this as serious as it is? >> right. they both say that they are looking at it. so president obama has already mandated healthier school lunches, and his office says he wants to do even more to make school lunches healthier. of course there's the let's move campaign from his wife. we reached out to the romney campaign because we couldn't find anything on their website about obesity. and the campaign did not get back to us. but we did see that in 2007, romney said yes, we ought to have healthier school lunches, but he was very clear. he said i don't want the federal government to mandate that. i want states and local school systems to do that on their own. >> and then i'm reading in the local paper this morning, and it's all over the wires as well about kids in america eating too much salt. in fact, eating as much salt as we are, grown-ups.

guidelines supported by michelle obama. guidelines are designed to fight obesity but students in kansas are rebelling fighting back with music video. what is going on? jim avila has the story. >> reporter: it's a lunchroom revolt. >> students and teachers at this high school creating a viral video protesting the new calorie cutting menus in their calf tear yeah. they say they are not getting enough to eat. ♪ >> their complaints, new school lunch guidelines rolled out, limited calories to fight the obesity epidemic among the youth. they restricted elementary schoolers to 650 calories, 750 middle schoolers and 850 for high school students. now, half of each plate must be filled with vegetables and fruit plus milk or a fruit smoothie on every tray. on some schools the amount of food thrown out is shocking. this month we visited a school in suburban chicago where high schoolers analyzed the weight. 46 boxes of pears. all that were served were thrown away. >> there is a 50% increase in lunchroom trash. >> they say the new menus are working in some schools and the rules are long overdue. >>

surprises here as well. >> some of the highlights, michelle obama is going to be speaking and jimmy carter and bill clinton will be speaking wednesday and that is always good? >> absolutely. what is interesting is that a lot of people say, boy, you don't want to share a stage with bill clinton and in fact, bill clinton is going to nominate president obama. he is the nomination speaker, and so, but he brings so much to the plate. number oner he is the most popular living ex-president right now and what does that include? swing voters and moderates and all of people upon whom the election may ride, and he is also extremely popular with the democratic base. clinton is kind of the good old days and that kind of remainind of him saying remember when i was president and things are great? well, that is the path that the president is on, and that is sort of the, he provides this backup for president obama as he nominates him. and it is clearly an emotional highlight for democrats who have always thought that president clinton was great. so he feels so many roles here reaching out to both the base
